Manuel Antonio Park Improvements
Manuel Antonio Park, just down the coast from Joya Pacifca, is one of Costa Rica's most beautiful and popular parks. This year the park is celebrating its 37th anniversary and 1.2 million (USD) is being spent on improving the park; the new facilities will ensure a cleaner park for everyone. From Conexion de la Camara:
...Over two years ago, the Chamber met with the three Ministers to tackle the contamination problem, and met again last year to find solutions and seek an extension for the closure order when the park was threatened to be shut down. Today, these new restrooms come as the result of over $1.2 million dollar in investment for infrastructure within the MA Park for 2010, and come equipped with outdoor showers, foot rinsing stations, and an improved septic system to help handle an increased number of park visitors and a new building for the park rangers. ...
And budget plans are being drawn up to expand the borders of the park next year:
...the trust has more than 2500 million colones for the purchase of land outside the park to extend the biological corridor in the area. In 2002 the park had 537 hectares then added Playa Rey with 14 kilometers of beach. Today the park has nearly 2000 acres of land and 55000 hectares of marine extension. In addition, the Park Board has identified more than 18000 hectares to be registered as State property as protected areas. With 300 thousand visitors and over 2 million dollars in revenue annually, a plan is essential to connect Manuel Antonio Park and Playa Rey to the biological corridors of the 3 riviers: Naranjo, Savegre and Portalón. The Chamber is working with a first draft of a project outline and hope that MINAET will help give an adequate budget for implementation in 2011...
